Background of the Study
Bibliometric methods have emerged as pivotal tools for mapping the landscape of scientific literature and identifying existing research gaps. At Thomas Adewumi University, these methods are employed to systematically analyze publication trends, citation networks, and thematic distributions to pinpoint areas that require further inquiry. By employing techniques such as co-word analysis, citation analysis, and network mapping, the university aims to not only evaluate past research efforts but also to forecast emerging topics in various fields. Such analyses are critical for aligning academic programs with national and global research priorities, ensuring that resources are directed toward underexplored areas. The integration of bibliometric approaches supports evidence-based decision-making by highlighting interdisciplinary intersections and shifts in research paradigms. With the advent of advanced digital analytics and data visualization tools, the identification of research gaps has become more precise and dynamic, leading to a more strategic alignment of research funding and collaborative efforts (Afolabi, 2023; Ogunyemi, 2024). Moreover, the application of bibliometric methods informs curriculum development, faculty recruitment, and institutional research strategies. By building a robust bibliometric foundation, Thomas Adewumi University can enhance its competitive edge and contribute to the advancement of knowledge while addressing critical societal challenges.
Statement of the Problem (150 words)
Despite the growing application of bibliometric methods, Thomas Adewumi University faces challenges in fully capitalizing on these tools for identifying research gaps. Inconsistencies in data quality, limited expertise in advanced bibliometric techniques, and the insufficient integration of bibliometric findings into strategic decision-making processes restrict the full realization of their benefits. As a result, certain emerging research areas remain underexplored, leading to a potential mismatch between institutional research priorities and global trends. This study aims to examine these barriers and recommend effective strategies to enhance the use of bibliometric analyses for identifying and bridging research gaps, thereby improving the overall research ecosystem at the university (Olowo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the current application of bibliometric methods in identifying research gaps.
To identify challenges related to data quality and methodological limitations.
To recommend strategies for integrating bibliometric insights into institutional research planning.
Research Questions
